                              corners, there are two older foliations. The earlier one is from <date when="1800">c. 1800</date> and 
                              shows traces of an earlier, random order of the gatherings; it
                              includes fols. <locus>1r-14v</locus>, but not fols. <locus>102r-107v</locus>. The gathering was probably lent out, perhaps for the
                              use of the editing of <bibl>
                                 <ref type="primary-1" target="SRDMAE">Scriptores Rerum Danicarum, II</ref>
                              </bibl>. <name type="person" key="JonSig004">Jón Sigurðsson</name> did the second foliation, and it is similar
                              to the order mentioned by <name type="person" key="ArnMag001">Árni Magnússon</name> in <ref type="ms">AM 435 a 4to</ref>, although it has been done without consideration for fols. <locus>1r-14v</locus>, as
                              these leaves were not incorporated into the Reykjavík collection of antiquities until <date when="1887">1887</date>.</p>
                           <p> Fols. <locus>1r-14r</locus> are paginated 1-27.</p>

                           <p>There are lacunae in three places in the manuscript: After fol. <locus>14</locus> two leaves have been excised, and
                              all that remains are narrow strips in the gutter. After fol. <locus>68</locus> one gathering is missing,
                              and after fol. <locus>76</locus> at least one gathering of eight leaves has been lost. Several leaves are damaged with
                              tears or holes, and others have an irregular shape.
                              Some of the damage does not allow the lines to be of full length, but this damage is apparently
                              older than the script. </p>
                           <p>The following leaves are torn: fols. <locus>2, 9-10, 15-28, 30, 32-35, 37-38, 40-43, 45-47, 49, 51, 53-60,
                              67-68, 70, 74-80, 82, 86, 88-89, 95, 97-100</locus>. On fol. <locus>82</locus> a corner has been torn off, and fols.
                              <locus>19</locus>, <locus>21</locus>
                              and <locus>59</locus> are half-leaves, although a thin slip of the lower part is preserved at the spine. The
                              lower part of these leaves was probably left blank, as the trimming has not caused any loss of text.
                              The bottom margin of fol. <locus>63</locus> is trimmed. </p>
                           <p>Several leaves are in poor condition due to dampness and wear. They have become dark, faded or
                              wrinkled. The script was touched up in <date notBefore="1600" notAfter="1699">the seventeenth
                                 century</date> with black ink where the writing had faded. </p>
                           <p>The restoration of the script on the following folios was done by Bishop <name type="person" key="BrySve001">Brynjólfur Sveinsson</name>: fols. <locus>1v, 3r, 4r, 5r, 6v, 8v, 9r, 10r, 14r-v, 22r,
                              30v, 36r-52v, 72v, 77r, 78r, 103r, 104r</locus>. According to <name type="person" key="ArnMag001">Árni
                                 Magnússon</name>'s account in <ref type="ms">AM 435 a 4to</ref>, fol. <locus>113</locus>, the lögmaður
                              <name type="person" key="SigBjo001">Sigurður Björnsson</name> told him that the rest of the touching
                              up was done by himself and another lögmaður, <name type="person" key="SigJon009">Sigurður Jónsson</name>. Sigurður Björnsson did the touching up on the following
                              folios: <locus>46v-47r, 48r, 49r-v, 50r and 52r-v</locus>. Sigurður Jónsson did the rest of the touching up in the
                              section <locus>36r-59r</locus> containing <title type="uniform">Bretasögur</title>.</p>

                        Christ, an alphabet in runes, a religious Latin verse and a drawing of a face.</p>

                        contemporary hand.</p>

                        <p>In <date when="1730">1730</date>, <name type="person" key="JonOla003">Jón Ólafsson</name> described the
                           manuscript as <q>skinnalaus</q>, or without any outer covering, and <q>med hampreimum</q>, which refers
                           to the thongs of hemp across the spine to which the gatherings were fastened. The manuscript was not
                           bound at this time. About a century later, in <date when="1828">1828</date>, Möbius (<bibl>
                              <ref type="secondary" target="Mobius1860">Edda Sæmundar hinns fróða</ref>
                              <!--<biblScope type="volume">III</biblScope>-->
                           </bibl>) wrote that there was a wooden board belonging to the binding of the book on which there was a
                           runic sign: <q>In tabula lignea, ad ligaturam voluminis pertinene, incisus est character insignis, e
                              Runis variis compositus, et priscum aliqvem libri possessorem indigitans</q>. But when <name type="person" key="KriKaa001">Kristian Kålund</name> (<bibl>
                              <ref type="secondary" target="KKKat">Katalog, I, 687</ref>
                           </bibl>) described AM 544 4to in <date when="1889">1889</date>, this wooden board had disappeared.</p>
                        <p>AM 544 4to was bound in <date when="1909">1909</date> and again in <date when="1967">1967</date>. The

                        <title>Hauksbók</title> has been divided into 3 parts in the AM collection: <ref type="ms">AM
                           371 4to</ref>, AM 544 4to and <ref type="ms">AM 675 4to</ref>. In addition to several unknown scribes, the
                        manuscript was written by <name type="person" role="owner" key="HauErl001">Haukr Erlendsson</name>. Letters from <date when="1302-01-28">28 January 1302</date> and <date when="1310-10-12">14 October 1310</date>, written by
                        Haukr, serve as evidence for this, as the script in the letters is similar to the main
                        hand in Hauksbók. After Haukr Erlendsson's death in <name type="place" key="Norwa01">Norway</name> in <date when="1334">1334</date>, it is presumed that the codex passed to his successors
                        in <name type="place" key="Icela01">Iceland</name> and was then passed on as an heirloom for
                        about the next 300 years. The next known owner, <name type="person" role="owner" key="BjaEin002">Bjarni
                           Einarsson</name>, can be 
                        discerned from a note on fol. <locus>59v</locus>: <q>

                        </q>. Bjarni Einarsson, who was a prosperous and notable man, knew the county sheriff (sýslumaður) 
                        <name type="person" role="owner" key="AriMag001">Ari Magnússon</name><!-- owner? --> of <name type="place" key="Ögur01">Ögur</name> (<date from="1571" to="1652">1571-1652</date>). In <date when="1635">1635</date>, after Bjarni Einarsson had died, Ari Magnússon lent <title>Hauksbók</title> to <name type="place" key="Skaga01">Skagafjörður</name>, and the manuscript passed on
                        to two men with antiquarian interests, the priest <name type="person" role="owner" key="ArnJon001">Arngrímur
                           Jónsson</name> (<date from="1568" to="1648">1568-1648</date>), and then on to the farmer <name type="person" role="owner" key="BjoJon006">Björn Jónsson</name> of <name type="place" key="Skarð02">Skarðsá</name>
                           (<date from="1574" to="1655">1574-1655</date>). A third person, the Bishop of <name type="place" key="Hólar01">Hólar</name>, <name type="person" key="ThoSku001" role="other">Þorlákur Skuláson</name> (<date from="1597" to="1656">1597-1656</date>), mentioned in his letter to <name type="person" key="OleWor001" role="other">Ole Worm</name> (<date from="1588" to="1654">1588-1654</date>) in <name type="place" key="Copen01">Copenhagen</name> in <date when="1636">1636</date> that Björn Jónsson had obtained the manuscript.
                        From <date from="1660" to="1670">1660 to 1670</date> Bishop <name type="person" role="owner" key="BrySve001">Brynjólfur
                           Sveinsson</name> owned the manuscript and touched up the script. </p>
